NEW SOCIETY VILLAGE DEMOLITION UPDATE: COURT OF APPEALS-MINDANAO ISSUES TRO

Updated: Mar 2, 2020

BUTUAN CITY – On Saturday, February 22, the residents of Barangay New Society Village breathed a sigh of relief at the release of Temporary Restraining Order (TRO) from the Court of Appeals - Mindanao (CA) regarding the demolition in the area.

The TRO has a maximum duration of 60 days from the date of release.

According to the Brgy. Captain Ibrahim Abdulahim, the issued TRO is giving them ample time to prepare. If the Court of Appeals will dismiss their plea, it will lead them to file a petition before the Supreme Court – adding they have already completed the 500,000 signatures for the said petition.

Abdulahim said they have also collected the needed P500,000 to grant their petition, as stated in the letter sent from the Court of Appeals.

The Brgy. Captain further clarified he did not command the residents to evacuate because it is their personal decision.

If the demolition proceeds where more than 100 families will be affected, Abdulahim is asking to keep at least the barangay hall and the mini-gym so it can be used as temporary shelter for the displaced residents who haven’t availed the relocation through the city housing.

For now, the barricades around the area have been removed, and the barangay captain encourages the residents to pray for their current situation.
